Château Ducru-Beaucaillou
Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is one of the most prestigious wine estates in Saint-Julien, on the Left Bank of Bordeaux, and is classified as a Second Growth (Deuxième Cru) in the historic 1855 Bordeaux Classification. The estate’s name comes from the French “beaux cailloux,” referring to the large gravel stones that cover its vineyards—an ideal soil for growing Cabernet Sauvignon.
Owned by the Borie family since 1941 and currently led by Bruno Borie, the château has developed a reputation for producing wines that combine power, precision, and elegance. The vineyard spans around 75 hectares, planted primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot adding roundness and depth to the blends.
The grand vin, Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, is known for its structure, aromatic complexity, and exceptional aging potential, often displaying blackcurrant, cedar, tobacco, graphite, and mineral notes. In addition to the flagship wine, the estate also produces a second wine, La Croix de Beaucaillou, and other cuvées that reflect the same attention to detail.
Stylistically, Ducru-Beaucaillou sits at the refined end of the Saint-Julien spectrum—less austere than some neighbors, yet still firmly structured and built to age for decades. Its combination of terroir, history, and consistent quality has made it one of the standout names in Bordeaux, often compared with some First Growth estates in top vintages.
