Fattoria Le Pupille
Fattoria Le Pupille is a renowned wine estate in the Maremma region of southern Tuscany, widely regarded as one of the leading producers of Morellino di Scansano and a key figure in elevating the reputation of this once-overlooked area. The estate dates back to the 1970s, when it was little more than a small farmhouse with a few hectares of Sangiovese vines, but it was transformed by Elisabetta Geppetti, who took over at a young age and set out to produce high-quality wines that could compete on an international level. With guidance from influential consultants such as Giacomo Tachis, she helped pioneer a new era for the region, including the creation of the estate’s flagship wine, Saffredi, first released in 1987 and now considered one of Tuscany’s notable “Super Tuscan” wines.
Today, the estate spans roughly 70–80 hectares of vineyards within a much larger property and produces around half a million bottles annually, combining traditional Tuscan varieties like Sangiovese with international grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. The vineyards benefit from the warm Mediterranean climate of Maremma, balanced by cooling influences from elevation and sea breezes, which help preserve freshness and aromatic complexity in the wines.
Stylistically, Fattoria Le Pupille is known for wines that combine ripe Tuscan fruit, structure, and Mediterranean warmth with increasing precision and elegance. Alongside Saffredi, key wines include Poggio Valente (a single-vineyard Sangiovese), Morellino di Scansano DOCG (the estate’s traditional backbone), and various IGT Toscana bottlings. These wines often show notes of dark cherry, plum, herbs, spice, and earthy undertones, supported by firm tannins and good aging potential.
