Bibi Graetz is an Italian winemaker and artist who has become one of Tuscanyās most distinctive and internationally acclaimed producers of expressive, terroirādriven wines. He is based in Fiesole, on the hills just above Florence, Italy, where his modern estate was established around 2000 after he shifted from a career in art to winemaking.
Graetz was born into a family of artistsāhis father is a noted sculptor and his own background is in fine artsāwhich influences both the creative spirit of his wines and the artistic labels they bear. Without formal winemaking training, he taught himself and chose a very personal approach focused on quality and tradition rather than strict regional DOC rules, which places many of his wines in the Super Tuscan / Toscana IGT category.
His wines are typically made from old vine Tuscan varieties such as Sangiovese, Colorino, and Canaiolo for reds, and Ansonica and Vermentino for whites, often sourced from ancient, highāaltitude vineyards handātended with minimal intervention. This vineyard philosophy aims to capture the unique character of each site.
The most famous wines from his estate include Testamatta (ācrazy headā), a powerful and expressive Sangioveseābased red, and Colore, a blend of indigenous varietiesāboth benchmarks of modern Tuscan winemaking. His portfolio also includes vibrant everyday wines like Casamatta and several intriguing whites from vineyards on Isola del Giglio off the Tuscan coast.
