Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is one of the nine Grand Cru vineyards in the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation of the Côte de Nuits, Burgundy, France. It is known for producing Pinot Noir wines that are typically more approachable, generous, and seductive in style compared to some of the more structured and austere neighboring Grand Crus like Chambertin or Clos de Bèze.
Covering around 30 hectares, Charmes-Chambertin is one of the largest Grand Cru vineyards in Gevrey-Chambertin and includes a sub-climat called Mazoyères-Chambertin, which can be labeled as Charmes-Chambertin. The soils here are predominantly limestone and clay, with a slightly deeper topsoil than some other Grand Crus, contributing to a softer, fruit-forward character in the wines.
Wines from Charmes-Chambertin typically offer aromas of ripe red berries, floral notes (like rose petals), and earthy spice, with a silky texture, moderate tannins, and a round, plush mouthfeel. While they are capable of aging for 10–20 years or more in good vintages, they tend to be more accessible in youth than the more robust and long-lived Grand Crus nearby.
Top producers include Domaine Armand Rousseau, Dugat-Py, Claude Dugat, and Perrot-Minot, among others. Though often considered slightly less prestigious than Chambertin or Clos de Bèze, a well-made Charmes-Chambertin from a top domaine and vintage can be a wine of great charm, elegance, and depth, true to its name.
