In the northern part of Rhône Valley, Cornas stands apart for its uncompromising style. Unlike many other appellations, only red wines are produced here, all made from Syrah.
Cornas wines are known for their depth, structure, and intensity. The steep, granite-rich slopes surrounding the village create ideal conditions for Syrah, resulting in wines that show dark fruit, black olive, spice, and a distinctive earthy character. Compared to neighbouring appellations such as Saint-Joseph or Crozes-Hermitage, Cornas is typically more powerful and concentrated.
These wines are often built for ageing. In their youth, they can be firm and structured, but with time they develop greater complexity, revealing notes of leather, smoke, and dried herbs. In strong vintages, Cornas can evolve for 10 to 20 years or more.
Leading producers such as Domaine Auguste Clape, Domaine Thierry Allemand, and Domaine Vincent Paris have played a key role in defining the modern reputation of Cornas.
