Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is the smallest of all Burgundy Grand Crus, with just over 1.5 hectares of vineyard located at the southern end of Chassagne-Montrachet. Its rarity makes it one of the most exclusive white wines in Burgundy, dedicated entirely to Chardonnay. Despite its modest size, Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet has a distinctive identity, producing wines that combine generosity with freshness.
The terroir is composed of limestone and marl, with a warmer exposure than other Montrachet vineyards. This results in wines that are often more expressive in their youth, offering aromas of peach, apricot, citrus, and honey, framed by floral undertones. On the palate they are concentrated but balanced, with a silky texture and vibrant acidity that ensures longevity.
Because so few producers own land here, the wines are extremely difficult to find. Esteemed domaines such as Hubert Lamy and Fontaine-Gagnard release small quantities that are treasured by Burgundy enthusiasts for their rarity and distinctive style.
