Domaine de la Janasse
Domaine de la Janasse is a highly respected family-owned winery in the southern Rhône Valley of France, based in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The estate was founded in 1973 by Aimé Sabon and is now run by his children, who have expanded its reputation into one of the benchmark producers of the appellation.
The domaine owns and farms a significant range of vineyards across Châteauneuf-du-Pape and nearby appellations such as Côtes du Rhône and Côtes du Rhône Villages. It focuses on traditional Rhône grape varieties, primarily Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre for reds, along with Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, and Clairette for whites.
Domaine de la Janasse is especially known for its powerful yet balanced Châteauneuf-du-Pape blends, which combine ripe fruit concentration with structure and freshness. Typical tasting profiles include black cherry, plum, garrigue herbs, spice, licorice, and earthy notes, with a dense but polished texture and strong aging potential.
The estate produces several cuvées, including its classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape red and white wines, as well as more prestigious selections from older vines, which are richer, more complex, and more structured. In strong vintages, these wines are often considered among the top tier of the appellation.
Stylistically, Janasse sits between traditional and modern Rhône winemaking: it maintains a classic GSM (Grenache–Syrah–Mourvèdre) identity while refining extraction and élevage to achieve greater precision and finesse.
Today, Domaine de la Janasse is widely regarded as one of the leading producers of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, consistently delivering wines that combine richness, balance, and excellent value relative to the region’s top estates.
