Joseph Drouhin
Joseph Drouhin is one of the most respected and historic wine houses of Burgundy, founded in 1880 in Beaune by Joseph Drouhin. Today, the domaine remains family-owned and is run by the fourth generation of the Drouhin family. It is known for producing a very broad range of Burgundy wines, from regional appellations to some of the most prestigious Grand Crus of the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune.
The house owns and manages an impressive vineyard estate of around 100 hectares, including many important sites in Burgundy. Its holdings include famous vineyards such as Clos des Mouches, Musigny, Clos de Vougeot, Chambertin, Bonnes-Mares, and Montrachet, among others. This combination of vineyard ownership, historical knowledge, and careful selection of purchased grapes has made Joseph Drouhin one of Burgundy’s most internationally recognized names.
A defining feature of Joseph Drouhin is its commitment to organic and biodynamic viticulture. The domaine began moving toward organic farming in the late 1980s and has progressively adopted more sustainable practices, aiming to preserve soil health and express the character of each terroir as naturally as possible.
The wines are known for a style that emphasizes elegance, balance, purity, and finesse rather than power or excessive extraction. The red wines, mainly made from Pinot Noir, often show delicate aromas of red berries, flowers, spices, and earthy complexity, with refined tannins and excellent ageing potential. The white wines, made from Chardonnay, are celebrated for their freshness, minerality, and precision, especially from prestigious sites such as Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet.
Among the estate’s most famous wines is Beaune Premier Cru Clos des Mouches, a signature cuvée produced in both red and white versions. The red expresses the elegance of Beaune Pinot Noir, while the white is one of Burgundy’s most admired examples of Chardonnay. Other highly regarded wines include Meursault, Gevrey-Chambertin, Volnay, Nuits-Saint-Georges, and Grand Crus such as Musigny and Montrachet.
