Founded in 1973 by Joseph ā€œJoeā€ Phelps, a visionary who came to wine after a successful career building his family’s construction business, the estate began on a former cattle ranch near St. Helena that he fell in love with for its terroir and scenic potential.

Joe Phelps quickly established an ambitious program focused on quality and innovation. InĀ 1974 he released Insignia, the winery’s flagship proprietary Bordeaux‑style red blend, which was one of the first of its kind in California and has become an iconic benchmark for Napa Valley wine. Insignia has achieved extraordinary acclaim over the decades, including multiple perfect 100‑point scores by critics and being named ā€œWine of the Yearā€ by Wine Spectator.

Phelps was also an early adopter of varietal Syrah in California, releasing one of the state’s first Syrahs in 1974, and explored other RhĆ“ne‑style and Bordeaux varietals. Today the estate produces a broader portfolio that includes Cabernet Sauvignon (including single‑vineyard bottlings), Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Syrah, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from both Napa Valley and the cooler Sonoma Coast.Ā

Joseph Phelps Vineyards owns and farms several hundred acres of estate vineyards across prestigious Napa Valley appellations (including St. Helena, Oakville, Rutherford, Stags Leap District, Oak Knoll and Carneros) and also in Freestone on the Sonoma Coast for cool‑climate varieties.
The winery’s portfolio balances classic Napa power with precision and site expression: from rich, structured Cabernet‑based wines to elegant Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the Sonoma Coast.Ā

Joseph Phelps’ philosophy emphasized blending for quality and expressing vineyard distinctiveness—a practice that reshaped premium Napa winemaking. The estate continues this legacy while embracing sustainable farming practices (including Napa Green certification and land conservation efforts).

Since Joe’s passing in 2015, his family has continued the business, and in 2022 the winery became part of the MoĆ«t Hennessy (LVMH) portfolio, aligning it with some of the world’s leading luxury wine and spirits brands
