Marcel Deiss
Founded in 1947 by Marcel Deiss after World War II, the estate remains a family business. Today it’s run by Jean‑Michel Deiss alongside his son Mathieu, representing the third and fourth generations of a family that has been growing grapes in the area since the 18th century.
Marcel Deiss is best known for its terroir‑driven philosophy. Rather than focusing on single grape varieties—as is typical in much of Alsace—the domaine champions “complantation” (field blends), an old regional practice of planting several grape varieties together in the same parcel and harvesting and vinifying them as a unit to allow the terroir to express itself above the varietal signature. This approach extends into the winery’s labelling: many of its wines list only the vineyard name rather than the grape types—a practice Marcel Deiss helped change in French wine law so terroir could be acknowledged as paramount.
The estate comprises around 30+ hectares of biodynamically farmed vineyards across some of Alsace’s finest terroirs, including Grand Cru sites such as Altenberg de Bergheim, Schoenenbourg, and Mambourg. Biodynamic viticulture, minimal cellar intervention, and natural fermentations are central to Deiss’s winemaking, aiming to produce wines of depth, complexity, and a pure sense of place.
Wines from Marcel Deiss range from expressive dry whites and reds to rich late‑harvest styles, with aromatic complexity, minerality, and aging potential that have earned the estate a reputation as a terroirist benchmark in Alsace.
