TASTING NOTES:	Aurélien Lurquin’s 2020 Pinot Noir Les Forcières, matured for a full two years in 228-liter oak barrels—approximately 10% of which were new—and disgorged without dosage in September 2024, is showing superbly. Sourced from Pinot Noir vines planted in 1987 and 1989, in a 0.75-hectare parcel located barely 200 meters from Les Traverses, this site, Lurquin notes, is particularly susceptible to drought stress and sunburn, consistently yielding a meager crop—even by his standards. In 2020, it appears to have produced his most concentrated and multifaceted wine. The bouquet opens with evocative aromas of pear, orange zest, beeswax and dried white flowers, framed by a touch of youthful reduction. On the palate, the wine is medium- to full-bodied, ample and layered, with a vinous core of fruit and a textural attack leading into a deep and concentrated mid-palate with a low-pressure mousse and a long, mineral finish. Only half of the fruit from this parcel is reserved for Champagne; the remainder is vinified as red Coteaux Champenois.

About Champagne

Champagne, the epitome of sparkling wine elegance and celebration, hails from the namesake region in northeastern France, approximately 90 miles from Paris. The unique terroir, marked by a cool climate and chalky soils, sets the stage for the distinctive qualities of the grapes cultivated in this renowned viticultural area.

Crafted predominantly from three grape varieties – Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier – Champagne undergoes a meticulous production process known as the traditional method or méthode champenoise. This involves a secondary fermentation in the bottle, fostering the creation of effervescence, while an extended period on lees imparts complexity to the wine's flavor profile.

The sweetness levels of Champagne vary, denoted by terms such as Brut, Extra Brut, Sec, and Demi-Sec. Brut, the most prevalent style, signifies a dry Champagne.

The landscape of Champagne includes both venerable Champagne houses like Moët & Chandon, Veuve Clicquot, and Dom Pérignon, as well as smaller, independent growers focusing on estate-grown grapes. The region is protected by the French AOC system, emphasizing the exclusive use of the name "Champagne."
