About California

California wine is renowned worldwide for its quality and diversity. Key wine regions include Napa Valley, famous for its Cabernet Sauvignon and considered one of the most prestigious wine regions globally; Sonoma County, known for its Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Zinfandel, offering a more laid-back wine experience; and the Central Coast, which stretches from Santa Barbara to Monterey and includes areas like Paso Robles and Santa Maria Valley, producing excellent Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Rhône varietals. Other notable regions are the Central Valley, a major production area known for affordable, everyday wines; Mendocino County, which offers a range of organic and biodynamic wines; and the Sierra Foothills, known for Zinfandel and various Italian and Rhône varietals.

Popular grape varietals in California include Cabernet Sauvignon, particularly from Napa Valley, known for its full-bodied, tannic structure and aging potential; Chardonnay, widely planted with styles ranging from buttery and oaky to crisp and unoaked; Pinot Noir, prominent in cooler regions like Sonoma Coast and Santa Barbara County, valued for its elegance and complexity; and Zinfandel, often associated with robust, spicy red wines, with the best examples from Dry Creek Valley and Lodi. Merlot, commonly blended but also produced as a varietal wine, often softer and fruitier than Cabernet Sauvignon; Sauvignon Blanc, known for its crisp acidity and tropical fruit flavors; and Syrah, grown primarily in the Central Coast, offering bold, spicy wines, are also popular.

California is home to many outstanding wine producers known for their exceptional quality and influence in the wine industry. In Napa Valley, notable producers include Robert Mondavi Winery, a pioneer known for its Cabernet Sauvignon and Fumé Blanc; Opus One, a prestigious collaboration between Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild; Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, famous for its Cabernet Sauvignon that won the 1976 Judgment of Paris; Caymus Vineyards, known for its rich Cabernet Sauvignon; and Harlan Estate, which produces some of the most sought-after and expensive Bordeaux-style blends in the world.

In Sonoma County, Kistler Vineyards specializes in high-quality Chardonnay and Pinot Noir; Ridge Vineyards is famous for its Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon from the Monte Bello Vineyard; Williams Selyem is renowned for its exceptional Pinot Noir; Rochioli Vineyards is known for its premium Pinot Noir and Chardonnay; and Silver Oak is celebrated for its Cabernet Sauvignon, with vineyards in both Napa and Sonoma.

The Central Coast features Tablas Creek Vineyard, co-founded by the Perrin family of Château de Beaucastel and specializing in Rhône varietals like Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre; Au Bon Climat, known for its Burgundian-style Chardonnay and Pinot Noir; Brewer-Clifton, recognized for its high-quality, terroir-driven Pinot Noir and Chardonnay; Justin Vineyards & Winery, famous for its Bordeaux-style blends, particularly the Isosceles; and the Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance, a collective of producers known for their diverse range of high-quality wines.

In Mendocino County, Bonterra Organic Vineyards pioneers organic and biodynamic farming, producing a wide range of varietals; Goldeneye Winery, part of the Duckhorn Portfolio, is recognized for its exceptional Anderson Valley Pinot Noir; and Fetzer Vineyards is known for sustainable practices and approachable wines. The Sierra Foothills feature Terra d’Oro Winery, known for its Zinfandel and Italian varietals; Renwood Winery, celebrated for its old-vine Zinfandel; and Ironstone Vineyards, which produces a range of varietals with a focus on Zinfandel and Cabernet Franc.

Other notable producers across California include Screaming Eagle, producing some of the most expensive and sought-after wines in the world, particularly its Cabernet Sauvignon; Chateau Montelena, which gained fame from the 1976 Judgment of Paris and produces top-quality Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon; Heitz Cellar, renowned for its Martha's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon; and Turley Wine Cellars, which specializes in Zinfandel and Petite Syrah from old vines.
