TASTING NOTES: The 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage a Jacques Perrin is a blend of 60% Mourvedre, 20% Grenache, 10% Counoise, and 10% Syrah. Full-bodied, excruciatingly backward, and nearly impenetrable, it boasts an inky/blue/purple color in addition to a promising nose of new saddle leather, melted asphalt, camphor, blackberries, smoky, roasted herbs, and Asian spices. A huge lashing of tannin as well as a formidable structure result in the antithesis of its more flattering, forward, and voluptuous sibling, the classic Beaucastel. Readers lucky enough to come across this cuvee should plan on waiting at least a decade before it begins to approach adolescence.

Château de Beaucastel

About Château de Beaucastel

Château de Beaucastel, a historic and prestigious winery situated in the renowned Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation of the southern Rhône Valley, boasts a legacy dating back to the 16th century. Its storied history and commitment to winemaking excellence have firmly established it as one of the iconic producers in the region.

With roots reaching back to 1549, Château de Beaucastel's journey has evolved through the centuries. The Perrin family, stewards of the estate since the early 20th century, has played a crucial role in maintaining and enhancing its esteemed reputation.

The terroir of Château de Beaucastel is characterized by a diverse array of soils, including the famous galets roulés, contributing to the unique and complex flavors of its wines. The estate practices organic and biodynamic farming, emphasizing sustainable viticulture and minimal intervention in the winemaking process.

Château de Beaucastel is celebrated for its traditional Châteauneuf-du-Pape red wine blend, prominently featuring Grenache alongside Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Cinsault. The white wine blend includes Roussanne, Grenache Blanc, Picpoul, and Bourboulenc. These blends showcase the estate's commitment to authenticity and terroir expression.

The winemaking process at Château de Beaucastel follows traditional methods, with hand-harvested grapes undergoing fermentation in large wooden vats. Aging takes place in a combination of foudres and smaller oak barrels, contributing to the wines' complexity and structure.

Among its prestigious offerings, the flagship Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape red wine is highly regarded for its depth, structure, and aging potential. The white counterpart, Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc, is celebrated for its richness and complexity.

Château de Beaucastel has produced legendary vintages, sought after by collectors for their ability to age gracefully and evolve into nuanced expressions over time. The Perrin family, led by Jean-Pierre and François Perrin, has been instrumental in upholding the estate's standards and contributing to its continued success.

In essence, Château de Beaucastel stands as a symbol of winemaking excellence in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, embodying a rich history, a deep connection to the terroir, and an unwavering commitment to crafting exceptional wines that capture the essence of the southern Rhône Valley.
