TASTING NOTES: Tasted at a private dinner in Antwerp. A suitable Yquem to conclude a truly memorable dinner in Antwerp and this is the best bottle that I have found. It has a sublime bouquet of quince, marmalade, dried apricot and orange-blossom that offers stunning clarity given that it is now 37 years old. This bottle shows less oxidation than previous ones. The palate offers a viscous entry with honey, marmalade and orange peel – wonderful weight and presence and an effortless pure finish that lingers long in the mouth. This is a marvellous Yquem, though it is difficult to see how it will get better with bottle age. Tasted February 2013.

Château Yquem

About Château Yquem

Château d'Yquem, nestled in the illustrious Sauternes region of Bordeaux, stands as a paragon of excellence in the world of sweet white wines. With a lineage that spans centuries, the estate has become synonymous with unparalleled quality and the mastery of crafting elixirs from Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc grapes affected by noble rot.

Under the ownership of LVMH (Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton), Château d'Yquem's extensive vineyard holdings in Sauternes are a testament to the estate's commitment to producing wines of extraordinary character. The meticulous grape selection process, involving multiple passes to pick only those grapes touched by noble rot, is integral to the creation of wines that are a symphony of sweetness, complexity, and age-worthy finesse.

The winemaking at Château d'Yquem is an artistry that unfolds in the cellars, where gentle pressing and fermentation in new oak barrels give rise to wines of opulence. A prolonged aging period in barrels allows the wines to evolve, gaining richness and layers of flavor. The resulting elixirs, with flavors reminiscent of honey, apricot, tropical fruits, and the distinctive essence of noble rot, epitomize the Premier Cru Supérieur classification bestowed upon the estate in the Bordeaux Classification of 1855.

Château d'Yquem's wines are not merely sweet; they are a journey through time. The harmonious balance of sweetness and acidity renders them not only sumptuous in their youth but also capable of graceful aging for decades. Each vintage is a rarity, with limited production driven by the challenges and exacting standards of crafting wines of this caliber.

As the sole Premier Cru Supérieur in the 1855 Classification, Château d'Yquem stands as a symbol of excellence and rarity in the world of fine wines. Its opulent elixirs, celebrated for their luscious sweetness and enduring quality, continue to captivate the palates of collectors and connoisseurs, making Château d'Yquem an enduring icon in the realm of wine.
