TASTING NOTES: Made with whole-cluster fermentation, the Comm. G.B. Burlotto 2016 Barolo Monvigliero opens to distinctive intensity with floral notes backed by forest berry and bramble. Including the grape stems in fermentation imparts a slightly herbaceous character with eucalyptus and balsam herb. I also pick up on some freshly milled white pepper that reminds me of the Nebbiolo-adjacent Pelaverga grape that is also commonly planted in Verduno. The wine opens slowly to reveal grilled herbs, toasted chia seed and pistachio nut. More than obvious fruit, the core of the wine offers wild rose, lavender and pressed flowers. Production is approximately 8,000 bottles.

Comm. G.B. Burlotto

About Comm. G.B. Burlotto

The winery was founded in 1850 by Giovanni Battista Burlotto, a visionary in the Langhe region. Burlotto was one of the first to bottle and sell wine in the region, a revolutionary practice at the time. He was instrumental in promoting Barolo as a wine of international renown. His wines were even highly praised and sought after by the royal courts of Europe.

Burlotto became one of the pioneers of the Barolo industry, known for producing wines with a distinct elegance and precision, avoiding the heavier, more tannic style that was common in the past. The winery has maintained a reputation for crafting wines that capture the true character of the Langhe hills, relying on long aging processes and a delicate touch in the cellar.

Burlotto's approach to winemaking is deeply rooted in tradition. The vineyards are located in some of the best Barolo-producing areas, including Monforte d'Alba, La Morra, and Serralunga d'Alba. The estate emphasizes organic farming practices and works to preserve the health of the land and the unique qualities of the terroir. Their goal is to craft wines that express both the Nebbiolo grape and the landscape in a balanced, harmonious way.

The winery places a strong focus on the importance of vintage variation, meaning each wine reflects the unique characteristics of the year it was produced. They use a combination of traditional oak casks and concrete vats to age their wines, ensuring a delicate and nuanced result. Modern techniques, like temperature-controlled fermentation, help maintain freshness and clarity.

Today, the winery is still family-owned, with the Burlotto name representing a legacy of quality and respect for the land. The current owners continue the work of Giovanni Battista, preserving the estate’s historic values while embracing modern techniques that enhance their wines’ quality. Burlotto’s wines have become sought after not only in Italy but also globally, with many wine collectors and enthusiasts eager to experience them.

The combination of historical significance, respect for tradition, and focus on quality has cemented Comm. G.B. Burlotto as one of the most revered names in Barolo production.
