TASTING NOTES: The 2017 Rugiens from Céline Fontaine is another very, very good wine in the making, but it cannot match the optimal ripeness of the Clos des Chênes (due to the leaf roll disease) and is a bit more reticent out of the blocks as a result. The nose is a fine mix of black cherries, plums, a touch of currant leaf, dark chocolate, woodsmoke, a lovely base of soil, vanillin oak and a gentle topnote of violets. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, nascently complex and ripely tannic, with a good core, fine focus and grip and a long, balanced and youthful finish. This is not quite as sappy at the core as the other top reds in the cellar this year, but it will still be a lovely wine in the fullness of time. 2027-2060.

Pommard

About Pommard

Pommard, a venerable village nestled in the heart of the Côte de Beaune within Burgundy, France, stands as a symbol of excellence in winemaking. Renowned for its production of red wines primarily from the Pinot Noir grape, Pommard boasts a rich viticultural heritage and distinctive terroir.

Situated south of Beaune in the Côte d'Or region, Pommard is home to several Premier Cru vineyards, each playing a vital role in shaping the character of its wines. The terroir, marked by limestone and clay soils, imparts a unique signature to the red wines for which Pommard is celebrated.

Pinot Noir takes center stage in Pommard, giving rise to red wines that are robust, powerful, and characterized by bold tannins. These wines typically exhibit a deep color and showcase flavors of dark fruits, earth, and spice. While red wines predominate, there are also limited productions of white wines crafted from Chardonnay.

Among the notable Premier Cru vineyards in Pommard are Les Rugiens, Les Épenots, and Les Chanlins. While Pommard does not host any Grand Cru vineyards, certain Premier Cru sites are esteemed for producing wines of exceptional quality.

Steeped in history, Pommard's winemaking traditions date back to Roman times, with its name originating from "Po Mare," signifying a place with a pond, a nod to its geographical features.

Domaine de la Comtesse de Chérisey, Domaine de Courcel, and Domaine Joseph Voillot are among the esteemed producers contributing to the village's reputation.

In the Burgundy wine market, Pommard wines hold a special place, appealing to enthusiasts who appreciate the strength and aging potential inherent in these bold expressions of Pinot Noir. The village's long-standing legacy, coupled with its unique terroir and skilled winemakers, solidifies Pommard's position as a distinguished appellation in the world of Burgundian wines.
