TASTING NOTES: The 2022 Chablis 1er Cru Butteaux has performed well, as this site and its old vines tend to in dry, sunny vintages. Unwinding in the glass to reveal aromas of green apple, oyster shell and bread dough, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and satiny, with a layered, textural profile that's underpinned by good cut, concluding with a saline finish. On my most recent visit to the domaine, Isabelle Raveneau presented the young wines from barrel, along with a selection of the just-bottled 2021s. She compares the 2022 vintage with 2020; and in the wines' purity of fruit and ability to remain fresh and ethereal in so warm a year, 2022 is indeed strongly reminiscent of a somewhat fleshier 2020. The young 2021s couldn't offer more of a contrast: chiseled and incisive, with a touch of aromatic exotica in the generic Chablis bottling; but they are far from austere, and much like the domaine's 2016s, I suspect they will be quite approachable young despite their more old-school profile. Readers looking for more information on the history and approach of Domaine Raveneau are directed to my article in the End of March 2019 issue of The Wine Advocate.

Chablis

About Chablis

Chablis is a renowned white wine region in France, located in the northern part of the Burgundy wine region. The Chablis wine appellation is known for producing high-quality, unoaked Chardonnay wines. The cool climate and unique soil composition, particularly the Kimmeridgian limestone, contribute to the distinctive character of Chablis wines.

Chablis wines are typically known for their crisp acidity, minerality, and vibrant citrus flavors. They often showcase a steely and flinty quality, reflecting the influence of the region's terroir. The Chardonnay grapes grown in Chablis are generally unoaked or lightly oaked, allowing the natural characteristics of the grape and the terroir to shine through.

The Chablis region is classified into different appellations, including Petit Chablis, Chablis, Chablis Premier Cru, and Chablis Grand Cru, each offering wines with varying levels of complexity and aging potential. Chablis Grand Cru is considered the highest quality designation within the Chablis hierarchy.

Chablis wines are widely appreciated by wine enthusiasts around the world, and they pair well with a variety of dishes, including seafood, poultry, and goat cheese. When exploring Chablis, it's common to find terms like "flinty," "crisp," and "minerality" used to describe the unique qualities of these wines.

The most renowed Chablis producers include Vincent Dauvissat, Francois Raveneau and William Fèvre.
