TASTING NOTES: Jean-Louis Chave had done some preblending of the 2017 Hermitage at the time of my visit, meaning several parcels had already been combined with others, so there were fewer components to taste. A sample that included some L'Ermite, Les Beaumes and Péléat was fragrant, loaded with peppery spice and came across as slightly open-knit (93 - 95). A second component, mostly Le Méal, was richer and riper-tasting, with lush fruit and hints of roasted meat (97 - 99). Finally, a sample Jean-Louis described as "more the core of the blend" (mainly Les Bessards) was simultaneously firm and generous, with notes of crushed stone, cassis and licorice (98 - 100).

Domaine Jean-Louis Chave

About Domaine Jean-Louis Chave

Domaine Jean-Louis Chave is one of the most prestigious wine producers in the northern Rhône Valley of France, renowned for its Hermitage wines. The Chave family has been producing wine in the region since 1481, making it one of the oldest wine-producing families in the world. The domaine is especially famous for blending different vineyard plots to create its signature wines, considered among the finest expressions of the Syrah grape for reds and Marsanne and Roussanne for whites.

Located in Hermitage and Saint-Joseph, Northern Rhône, Domaine Jean-Louis Chave's wines are known for their elegance, complexity, and age-worthiness, balancing power with finesse. The domaine owns parcels in some of Hermitage’s most famous vineyard sites, including Les Bessards, Le Méal, and L'Ermite, each contributing distinct soil characteristics that enhance the wines’ complexity. The winemaking process is traditional, with organic practices and a focus on aging the wines in a combination of new and old oak barrels to maintain balance without overwhelming oak influence. Their key wines include the flagship Hermitage Rouge, a blend of several vineyard sites that showcases dark fruit, spices, and minerals with exceptional aging potential, and the Hermitage Blanc, a rich, full-bodied white wine with notes of stone fruit, honey, and nuts, which can age for decades. The domaine also produces excellent Saint-Joseph wines, which are more approachable than Hermitage but still of outstanding quality. Widely considered one of the finest producers in the Rhône Valley and globally, Domaine Jean-Louis Chave is celebrated for its unwavering attention to terroir and its tradition of consistent excellence.
