TASTING NOTES: I love the 1996 Clos des Ducs from Jacques d’Angerville, but true to his style back in this era, it remains a structured young wine in need of quite a bit more cellaring. However, all of the constituent components here are in perfect position for a long and very beautiful plateau of drinkability when the wine is ready, and all that is missing is the passage of more time. The youthful nose is pure and promising, wafting from the glass in a mix of red plums, woodsmoke, a hint of dried eucalyptus, a complex base of dark soil tones, woodsmoke and a bit of roasted venison in the upper register. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, tangy and rock solid at the core, with lovely focus and grip, moderate tannins and outstanding length and grip on the still quite primary, but very promising finish. Just have patience, as true greatness is lurking here!

Volnay

About Volnay

Volnay, nestled in the heart of the Côte de Beaune within the Burgundy region of France, stands as a venerable village celebrated for crafting some of the most exquisite red wines. Dedicated to the production of Pinot Noir, Volnay has earned a distinguished reputation for wines that embody finesse, aromatic complexity, and a profound expression of terroir.

The terroir of Volnay is characterized by diverse soils, including limestone, clay, and marl. The vineyards, often situated on slopes that provide excellent drainage and sun exposure, contribute to the unique character of Volnay wines. The village's winemakers uphold a traditional winemaking ethos, utilizing techniques such as fermentation in open wooden vats and aging in French oak barrels, allowing the inherent qualities of the grape and the terroir to shine.

Volnay wines are known for their delicacy, showcasing a light to medium body, vibrant acidity, and silky tannins. The aromatic profile is marked by red fruits such as cherry and raspberry, complemented by floral notes of violet, and occasionally featuring subtle earthy or spicy undertones. The overall impression is one of elegance and refinement.

While Volnay wines are approachable in their youth, their aging potential is a testament to their quality. Well-made Volnays can gracefully evolve with time, gaining complexity and depth, making them a fascinating choice for both immediate enjoyment and long-term cellaring.

Volnay boasts several Premier Cru vineyards that further elevate its status. Notable sites like Clos des Ducs, Les Caillerets, and Champans are revered for producing wines of exceptional quality, contributing to the village's overall prestige.
