Chassagne-Montrachet

About Chassagne-Montrachet

Chassagne-Montrachet, nestled in the heart of Burgundy's Côte de Beaune, is a revered wine-producing village celebrated for its exceptional white wines crafted from the noble Chardonnay grape. This village, along with Puligny-Montrachet and Meursault, forms the esteemed "Golden Triangle" of white wine production in the region.

The terroir of Chassagne-Montrachet is characterized by a diverse array of soils, including limestone, clay, and marl, fostering an environment where Chardonnay thrives. The vineyards, often situated at varying elevations and aspects, contribute to the nuanced and complex character of the wines.

Chassagne-Montrachet winemakers embrace traditional techniques, gently pressing the grapes and often fermenting and aging the wines in oak barrels. This approach imparts richness, texture, and subtle oak nuances to the wines.

The white wines of Chassagne-Montrachet are renowned for their opulence, complexity, and a delicate balance between fruit, acidity, and minerality. Aromas and flavors range from citrus fruits to orchard fruits, complemented by notes of hazelnuts and occasional floral or toasty undertones from the oak aging process.

Chassagne-Montrachet is home to several Premier Cru and Grand Cru vineyards, each contributing unique characteristics to the wines. Notable Premier Cru sites include Les Caillerets, La Romanée, and Morgeot. Additionally, a portion of the Grand Cru vineyard Bâtard-Montrachet, renowned for producing some of the most prestigious white Burgundy wines, lies within the village's boundaries.

Chassagne-Montrachet is further elevated in prestige by its association with the renowned Grand Cru vineyard, Le Montrachet. Shared between Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet, Le Montrachet is widely considered one of the most illustrious and sought-after vineyards not only in Burgundy but in the entire world of wine.

While Chardonnay dominates the production, Chassagne-Montrachet also produces red wines from Pinot Noir, albeit in smaller quantities. These red wines exhibit elegance and red fruit characteristics, adding diversity to the village's wine portfolio.
