TASTING NOTES: A deep and complex bouquet mingling notes of mandarin, apple, pear and peach with nuances of toasted nuts, fresh pastry and nutmeg introduces Niellon's 2018 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru, a full-bodied, rich and textural wine that's ample and muscular, with lively acids and a long, spicy finish. Reminiscent of a slightly livelier version of Niellon's 2015 Chevalier, this is quite open and expressive and will show well young.

Domaine Michel Niellon

About Domaine Michel Niellon

Domaine Michel Niellon is a highly respected family-run wine estate located in the village of Chassagne-Montrachet in Burgundy’s CĆ“te de Beaune, an area renowned for producing some of the world’s finest white wines.

The domaine was founded in the 19th century by LƩon Niellon and rose to international prominence under Michel Niellon, who took over in the 1960s and established its reputation for consistently high-quality wines. Today, it remains in family hands, run by subsequent generations, which has helped preserve its traditional yet precise approach to winemaking. With a relatively small vineyard holding of around 6 to 7.5 hectares, the estate focuses primarily on Chardonnay, alongside a small amount of Pinot Noir, allowing for meticulous vineyard management and low yields that enhance concentration and character.

The style of Domaine Michel Niellon is often described as a benchmark for classic white Burgundy: the wines combine richness and depth with freshness, minerality, and balance. Oak is used judiciously, typically around 15–30% new barrels, so that it supports rather than dominates the fruit. As a result, the wines tend to show layered aromas and flavors of citrus, pear, and white fruits, complemented by subtle notes of hazelnut, butter, and light toast, finishing with a long, mineral-driven persistence. Among its most celebrated wines are the Grand Crus BĆ¢tard-Montrachet and Chevalier-Montrachet, which showcase power and elegance respectively, as well as a range of Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Crus such as Clos Saint-Jean and Les Vergers. Overall, the domaine is widely regarded as one of the leading producers in Chassagne-Montrachet, known for its consistency, age-worthy wines, and its ability to express both richness and precision in equal measure.
