TASTING NOTES: The 2016 Sancerre Clos La Néore is almost Riesling-like in its firm yet fine personality, its unswerving purity and its clear translation of place. Don't expect a seductive Sancerre, this is dry and steely with an appealing bitterness making for a very grown up white wine. It's starting to show early signs of development in its light almond/lanolin character alongside lemon tea. It offers exceptional concentration while being light bodied and provides a steely core of acidity, keeping the wine together and powering on. If you have any in your cellar, I can make myself available for dinner.

Loire Valley

About Loire Valley

The Loire Valley, situated in central France, is a region celebrated for its scenic landscapes, historic castles, and a rich tapestry of diverse wines. Divided into distinctive subregions, each marked by unique terroirs and grape varieties, the Loire Valley is a treasure trove of oenological delights.

In the east, Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé stand out, producing renowned Sauvignon Blanc wines. Sancerre delivers crisp, mineral-driven whites, while Pouilly-Fumé boasts smoky and flinty characteristics. Moving westward, Vouvray in the Touraine region is renowned for Chenin Blanc wines, ranging from dry to sweet, with floral and honeyed notes.

In the western part of the region, near the Atlantic coast, Muscadet takes the stage, crafting dry, light wines from the Melon de Bourgogne grape, cherished for their compatibility with seafood.

For red wines, Chinon and Bourgueil in the Touraine region showcase the versatility of Cabernet Franc, ranging from light and fruity to robust and age-worthy. Saumur-Champigny is another red wine haven, celebrated for its fresh and vibrant expressions of Cabernet Franc.

In the realm of rosé, Anjou and Touraine produce delightful wines, often from Cabernet Franc or Grolleau grapes, offering refreshing profiles with bright fruit flavors.

Not to be overlooked is the sparkling wine prowess of the Loire Valley, with Crémant de Loire, a traditional method sparkling wine available in white, rosé, and occasional red expressions.

The Loire Valley's wines embody the diversity of climates and soils, appealing to enthusiasts seeking crisp Sauvignon Blancs, aromatic Chenin Blancs, or elegant Cabernet Francs. Whether exploring the eastern reaches with their mineral-driven whites or the western expanses with seafood-friendly Muscadets, the Loire Valley beckons with a myriad of flavors, showcasing the region's rich viticultural heritage.
