TASTING NOTES:	A more near-term candidate for consumption is the 2007 Ermitage l'Ermite. It is a more austere, slightly less concentrated effort possessing notes of powdered rock as well as red and black fruits, full-bodied power, and a long finish. It is not among the pantheon of the most compelling Ermitage l'Ermites made by Michel Chapoutier, but it is certainly an outstanding one.

About Maison M. Chapoutier

Maison M. Chapoutier is one of the most important and influential wine producers in the Rhône Valley of France, known for its deep commitment to terroir, biodynamic viticulture, and single-vineyard wines. The estate is based in Tain-l'Hermitage and was transformed into a world-class producer under the leadership of Michel Chapoutier, who took over the family business in the late 1980s.

Chapoutier produces wines across both the Northern Rhône and Southern Rhône, with a strong focus on expressing individual vineyard sites (often labeled “Lieu-dit”). It is especially renowned for wines from iconic appellations such as Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, Crozes-Hermitage, and Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

A defining feature of Chapoutier is its pioneering use of biodynamic farming, making it one of the earliest major estates in France to fully adopt this approach. The philosophy emphasizes soil health, biodiversity, and minimal intervention in both vineyard and cellar.

The winery is particularly famous for its single-vineyard bottlings of Hermitage, especially from sites like Le Méal, Le Pavillon, and L’Ermite, which are among the most powerful and age-worthy expressions of Syrah in the world. Chapoutier also produces white wines from Marsanne and Roussanne, which are highly regarded for richness and texture.

Stylistically, Chapoutier wines often combine intensity, concentration, and structure with a strong sense of place. They can be robust and deeply flavored in youth but develop remarkable complexity over time.
