TASTING NOTES: The 2017 Vintage Port Nacional is a field blend, mostly Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinto CĆ£o, SousĆ£o and Tinta Roriz, aged for 18 months in old wood. It comes in at 99 grams of residual sugar and was bottled about a month before this tasting after 18 months in wooden vats. In 2016, I might've made an argument that the regular Noval was better. In this vintage, this seems to be a clear choice, granting that Ports change constantly in their youth. Its siblings at all levels in the last few vintages are very fine, but this is an indisputable benchmark that seems to better them all. Rich and vibrant, this has plenty of stuffing and flavor, more than the regular Noval. Then, it adds layer after layer of power. A couple of hours of air makes both the flavors and tannins more intense. It is simply gripping—yet also remarkably fresh. It's a great Noval, and one of the shortlist candidates for "Wine of the Vintage." There were 200 cases produced.

About Port

Port wine, originating from the picturesque Douro Valley in northern Portugal, is a fortified wine renowned for its rich and sweet characteristics. Crafted through the fortification process, where a grape spirit, often brandy, is added to partially fermented red wine, port embodies a unique blend of traditional Portuguese grape varieties. Among these are Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, contributing to the complexity and depth of the final product.

Port wine presents various styles, each with distinctive features. Ruby Port, known for its youthful and fruity profile, is often aged in large tanks or bottles. Tawny Port, having undergone aging in wooden barrels, develops a tawny color and exhibits nutty, caramel-like flavors. Vintage Port, considered the pinnacle, is produced in exceptional years from the finest grapes, offering unmatched quality and age-worthiness. Late Bottled Vintage (LBV) port, aged longer than standard vintage port, is typically ready to drink upon release. White Port, made from white grape varieties, can be dry or sweet and is frequently enjoyed as an aperitif.

Aging plays a crucial role in the development of port wines, whether in bottles or wooden barrels. This extended maturation contributes to the complexity and evolution of flavors and aromas. Port is commonly served as a dessert wine, complementing cheeses, chocolates, or enjoyed on its own.

Well-established port houses, such as Graham's, Taylor's, and Sandeman, have a rich history of producing high-quality ports. These houses may each have their unique styles and aging techniques, contributing to the diversity found within the world of port wine.

The production of port wine is regulated by the Instituto dos Vinhos do Douro e Porto (IVDP), ensuring adherence to quality standards and the preservation of authenticity. With its rich history and esteemed reputation, port wine remains a classic and cherished beverage, appreciated by connoisseurs around the globe for its sweetness, complexity, and remarkable aging potential.
