TASTING NOTES: Coming from a problematic, low-yielding vintage with a rainy summer but a very sunny September, the 2021 Heerkretz Riesling GG is based on the fruit picked between the 10th and 28th of October. This is reflected in a beautifully open and aromatic bouquet that is almost as generous as Gewurztraminer but speaks clearly of Riesling with a flinty accent. It is very clear, deep and intense on the super elegant and irresistible nose. Round, rich but savory and pure on the palate, with fine tannins intertwining with the saline acidity and herbal notes toward the finish, this is a beautiful Heerkretz with body and soul. It's generous and complex and made to be aged. Very long and pure, this is a picture-book Heerkretz. 13% stated alcohol. Diam cork. Tasted in August 2023.

Wagner-Stempel

About Wagner-Stempel

Weingut Wagner-Stempel is a leading German wine estate located in the village of Siefersheim, in the western part of Rheinhessen, a region increasingly known for high-quality, terroir-driven wines. The winery dates back to 1845 and has been run by the Wagner family for multiple generations; today it is led by winemaker Daniel Wagner, who took over in the early 1990s and played a major role in elevating the estate’s international reputation.

The domaine farms around 20–25 hectares of vineyards, primarily planted with white grape varieties, especially Riesling, which accounts for roughly half of the production. Other important grapes include Pinot Blanc (Weissburgunder), Silvaner, and small amounts of Pinot Noir. The estate has been a member of the prestigious Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter since 2004 and is certified organic, reflecting its strong focus on sustainable and quality-driven viticulture.

A defining feature of Wagner-Stempel is its unique terroir: steep, windswept vineyards on volcanic (rhyolite/porphyry) soils, particularly in top sites such as Heerkretz, Höllberg, and Scharlachberg. These conditions give the wines a distinctive profile—cool-climate precision, high acidity, and pronounced mineral character, often described as salty or stony. The philosophy centers on meticulous vineyard work, low yields, and hand harvesting, based on the idea that quality is primarily created in the vineyard rather than the cellar.

Stylistically, Wagner-Stempel wines are typically lean, taut, and expressive, especially the Rieslings, which combine citrus, stone fruit, and herbal notes with vibrant acidity and a long, mineral finish. The estate is particularly renowned for its Grosses Gewächs (GG) bottlings from top sites like Heerkretz, which are considered among the finest dry Rieslings in Germany.

Overall, Wagner-Stempel is widely regarded as one of the benchmark producers of modern Rheinhessen: a winery that marries traditional craftsmanship with a clear, terroir-focused style, producing wines that emphasize precision, freshness, and a strong sense of place.
