TASTING NOTES:	The 2019 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru is the most muscular, youthfully reserved wine in the range, unwinding in the glass with notions of sweet berries and plums complemented by hints of raw cocoa, exotic spices, grilled meats and burning embers. Full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, it's rich and textural, with broad shoulders and considerable concentration. It's a brilliant Clos de Bèze in the making. The 2019 vintage—which began on September 9 at this address—is another terrific success for Pierre Duroché. Volumes are down, with yields averaging around 30 hectoliters per hectare, but quality continues to climb: Supple, dynamic and concentrated, all these 2019s come warmly recommended, but sadly they're increasingly carefully allocated. What's more, the 2018s, revisited from bottle, confirmed all the promise they showed last year. But what has changed since last year? In the vineyards, Duroché is experimenting with "tressage," rolling vines' canopies instead of trimming them—and to that end, he's pragmatically raising stakes and trellising wires so he has the option to hedge in a rainy, disease-prone vintage but can also opt not to in sunny, warm years. In the cellar, new oak continues to make a minimal contribution, but the historic emphasis on Tonnellerie Cadus has diminished, to avoid any one cooper defining the domaine style. Vinifictions continue to be rather delicate, with comparatively short macerations and little in the way of pigeage.

About Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Chambertin Clos de Bèze is one of the most prestigious Grand Cru vineyards in Burgundy, situated in the Côte de Nuits subregion of the Côte d'Or, within the renowned Gevrey-Chambertin appellation. Planted exclusively with Pinot Noir, it is celebrated for producing wines of remarkable elegance, power, and longevity. The vineyard spans approximately 15 hectares, making it slightly larger than its famous neighbor, Chambertin, and is owned by multiple highly regarded producers such as Domaine Armand Rousseau, Faiveley, Bruno Clair, and Drouhin-Laroze.

The terroir of Chambertin Clos de Bèze features limestone-rich soils with excellent drainage, and its elevation ranges between 260 and 300 meters, contributing to the complexity and balance of the wines. Typically, the wines from Clos de Bèze are deeply expressive, showcasing aromas and flavors of red and black fruits—like cherry, raspberry, and blackcurrant—along with earthy undertones, spices, and floral notes such as violets. As the wine ages, it often develops nuances of forest floor, game, and truffle. Structurally, it combines vibrant acidity with firm yet refined tannins, allowing it to age gracefully for several decades.

Clos de Bèze is frequently compared to Chambertin itself, with many considering it the more elegant of the two, offering a slightly more aromatic and accessible expression while still retaining immense depth and structure. As a Grand Cru, it represents the pinnacle of Pinot Noir expression in Burgundy and is sought after by collectors and connoisseurs worldwide.
