TASTING NOTES: Readers may remember my admiration for the 2015 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru shortly after it was bottled. Today, as the wine is released onto the market, my enthusiasm is undiminished, as the wine is showing superbly, unfurling in the glass with a deep bouquet of cherries, raspberries, rose petals, exotic spices, orange rind and hints of smoked duck and forest floor. Full-bodied, deep and layered, it's seamless and complete, with terrific concentration, powdery tannins and lively animating acids that come together in an effortless ensemble. Concluding with a broad, expansive finish, five years in Mugnier's cellars before release haven't brought the wine to anywhere near its ultimate peak, but they have at least given a sense of the direction of travel!

Musigny Grand Cru

About Musigny Grand Cru

Musigny Grand Cru refers to one of the most esteemed classifications in Burgundy, France. It's a designation given to select vineyards that produce wines of exceptional quality. Musigny is a small Grand Cru appellation located within the Côte de Nuits sub-region of Burgundy. Wines produced from this vineyard are typically made from Pinot Noir grapes for red wines and Chardonnay grapes for white wines.

Musigny Grand Cru wines are known for their elegance, complexity, and aging potential. They often exhibit characteristics of red fruits, earthiness, floral notes, and a distinctive minerality. Due to their limited production and high demand, Musigny Grand Cru wines are among the most sought-after and expensive wines in the world.

The Musigny vineyard itself is divided into two parts: Musigny Blanc (for white wines) and Musigny Rouge (for red wines). Both sections are highly regarded, with Musigny Rouge particularly celebrated for producing some of the finest Pinot Noir wines in Burgundy. The classification as Grand Cru indicates that the vineyard is recognized as being of the highest quality and is subject to strict regulations to maintain its prestige.

Musigny Grand Cru boasts a handful of renowned producers crafting wines of exceptional quality and prestige.

Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé stands out as a legendary producer, particularly esteemed for its Musigny Rouge, known for finesse and longevity.

Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier earns accolades for purity of fruit, elegance, and precision in its Musigny Grand Cru wines. Meanwhile, Domaine Leroy, a Burgundy legend, meticulously crafts wines of exceptional quality with attention to detail in both vineyard and cellar.

Domaine Dujac's Musigny Grand Cru offerings are prized for their complexity, balance, and aging potential. Likewise, Domaine Georges Roumier's wines are revered for their depth, structure, and ability to evolve beautifully with age.

These producers, among others, consistently deliver Musigny Grand Cru wines that captivate wine enthusiasts and collectors worldwide, showcasing the terroir's utmost potential and the mastery of winemaking artistry.
