TASTING NOTES: In 2003, we will finally see several releases, including his 1997 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Marie Beurrier. Although this is an outstanding effort from a difficult vintage, Bonneau is used to producing wines that are far better out of bottle than from barrel. This 1997 has gotten better with each year of aging, and from bottle, it is an outstanding example of Chateauneuf du Pape. A heady concoction of kirsch liqueur, licorice, pepper, and ripe black cherry fruit is offered in a rich, full-bodied, surprisingly intense style. The acid is low, the fruit ripe, and the wine plump and juicy. Typical of many Bonneau efforts, it offers notes of smoke, beef blood, earth, figs, and prunes.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape

About Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Châteauneuf-du-Pape, a historic and revered wine appellation nestled in the southern Rhône Valley of France, holds a prestigious position among the world's iconic wine regions. Its name, translating to "New Castle of the Pope," pays homage to the period when Pope Clement V established the papal court in Avignon during the 14th century. This terroir-rich region is celebrated for producing powerful and distinctive wines, primarily red blends dominated by Grenache, accompanied by notable white wines.

The grape varieties in Châteauneuf-du-Pape create a symphony of flavors, textures, and aromas. Red wines, the majority, showcase Grenache, complemented by Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, and others. White wines, though less common, add diversity to the region, featuring blends of Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Clairette, and Bourboulenc, resulting in wines of depth and complexity.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape's terroir is characterized by a diverse range of soils, including the iconic galets roulés, large rounded stones that store heat and contribute to grape ripening. Winemakers in the region employ traditional techniques, fermenting and aging wines in various vessels such as concrete tanks, large wooden foudres, and smaller oak barrels. This allows for the nuanced development of complexity and refinement of tannic structure.

The tasting profile of Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines is distinctive. Red wines are known for their full-bodied nature, rich texture, and a diverse array of flavors, including dark fruits like blackberry and cherry, complemented by herbal and spicy elements. White wines exhibit richness and complexity, featuring flavors of stone fruits, citrus, and occasional herbal or nutty nuances.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines have excellent aging potential. Well-made reds develop nuanced tertiary characteristics, while whites gain complexity and depth over time. Traditionally bottled in dark bottles embossed with the papal coat of arms, Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines are a symbol of Rhône Valley winemaking excellence.

While Châteauneuf-du-Pape lacks a formal classification system like Bordeaux, the diverse terroir contributes to the uniqueness of individual vineyards. This region's rich history, diverse terroir, and the mastery of winemakers have solidified its status as a beacon of the southern Rhône, producing wines of power, complexity, and enduring appeal.

The most renowned producers of Châteauneuf-du-Pape include Château de Beaucastel, Château Rayas, Clos des Papes and Henri Bonneau.
