TASTING NOTES: The 2009 Cristal is a blend of Grands Crus from the Montagne de Reims, the VallƩe de la Marne and the CƓte des Blancs (a total of 33-34 parcels of which 40% were farmed biodynamically). Like the 2008 Cristal, the 2009 also blends 60% Pinot Noir with 40% Chardonnay, and 16% of the wine was vinified in oak casks. No malolactic fermentation was done. The 2009 was aged for six years in the cellars and was disgorged in March 2016 with a dosage of eight grams per liter. Released two years ago, the 2009 is just starting another, more "Burgundian" life. Tasted in May 2018, the bouquet was pretty reductive, with flinty and toasty/nutty notes and some potted ginger flavors. Full-bodied, round and rich on the palate, this is a stunningly pure, fresh and salty 2009 that is driven by its chalky terroir and the lingering salinity. Is it really 2009? It is ripe, yes, but driven by the strength of chalk. The finish is pure, clean, fresh, very complex and long yet delicate and endlessly salty. However, two years after disgorgement, the 2009 Cristal is closing down and in a pretty reductive stage right now. Tasted May 2018.

Champagne

About Champagne

Champagne, the epitome of sparkling wine elegance and celebration, hails from the namesake region in northeastern France, approximately 90 miles from Paris. The unique terroir, marked by a cool climate and chalky soils, sets the stage for the distinctive qualities of the grapes cultivated in this renowned viticultural area.

Crafted predominantly from three grape varieties – Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier – Champagne undergoes a meticulous production process known as the traditional method or mĆ©thode champenoise. This involves a secondary fermentation in the bottle, fostering the creation of effervescence, while an extended period on lees imparts complexity to the wine's flavor profile.

Champagne offers a diverse array of styles, including Non-Vintage (NV) blends for consistency, Vintage Champagnes from exceptional years, RosƩ Champagnes often created with a touch of red wine, and Prestige CuvƩes showcasing the pinnacle of a producer's artistry.

The sweetness levels of Champagne vary, denoted by terms such as Brut, Extra Brut, Sec, and Demi-Sec. Brut, the most prevalent style, signifies a dry Champagne.

The landscape of Champagne includes both venerable Champagne houses like Moƫt & Chandon, Veuve Clicquot, and Dom PƩrignon, as well as smaller, independent growers focusing on estate-grown grapes. The region is protected by the French AOC system, emphasizing the exclusive use of the name "Champagne."

Globally recognized and associated with special occasions, Champagne is a symbol of luxury and joy. The ComitƩ Interprofessionnel du Vin de Champagne (CIVC) oversees regulations and quality standards, highlighting the economic importance of Champagne production for the region.

Whether sipped as an aperitif, paired with a meal, or toasting to a milestone, Champagne stands as an iconic and cherished sparkling wine, embodying the artistry, tradition, and effervescence that define this illustrious French wine.
