TASTING NOTES: The Luciano Sandrone 2016 Barolo Aleste is a very special wine for several reasons. First, we get that exceedingly smooth and seamless quality that we saw in many of the other new releases in this portfolio. This trait sums up the house style. Second, this vintage delivers impeccable intensity that transcends the various fruit, spice, earthy and ethereal components of the bouquet. That equal intensity spread across all parts of the wine is what creates those beautiful transitions. The wine is layered and rich in terms of mouthfeel with a long, fruit and spice-driven finish. The tannins are tucked in at the back, surrounded amply by the wine's textural richness and fruit weight.

Luciano Sandrone

About Luciano Sandrone

Luciano Sandrone is one of the most iconic producers in Barolo and a defining figure of modern Piedmont winemaking. Founded in 1978 in the village of Barolo, the winery grew from humble beginnings, with Luciano producing his first wines in the garage of his parents' home after purchasing a small parcel in the renowned Cannubi Boschis vineyard in 1977. Without inheriting vineyards or a family estate, he built the domaine through meticulous vineyard acquisitions, relentless attention to detail, and an unwavering pursuit of quality. Today, the winery is run by the Sandrone family, continuing Luciano's vision following his passing in 2023.

The Sandrone philosophy combines profound respect for Barolo's traditions with thoughtful innovation. Fruit is sourced exclusively from exceptional sites in Barolo and Roero, with meticulous vineyard management, parcel-by-parcel vinification, and careful Ʃlevage in French oak barrels. Rather than pursuing either a purely traditional or modern style, Sandrone seeks balance, producing wines that marry concentration and structure with elegance, freshness, and remarkable transparency to vintage and terroir.

The estate's flagship wines include Barolo Le Vigne, a classic multi-vineyard blend sourced from prestigious sites across Barolo, celebrated for its complexity and longevity, and Barolo Aleste (formerly Cannubi Boschis), a single-vineyard expression from one of the appellation's greatest crus, combining power with extraordinary finesse. The rare Vite Talin, produced from a unique Nebbiolo biotype discovered by Luciano himself, represents the winery's most ambitious and limited bottling. Alongside these iconic Barolos, the estate also produces outstanding Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore, Barbera d'Alba, and Dolcetto d'Alba, all crafted with the same precision and respect for site.

Sandrone's wines are renowned for their purity of fruit, silky yet structured tannins, vibrant acidity, and exceptional aging potential. Aromas of rose, violet, red cherry, raspberry, orange peel, licorice, spice, and tar unfold over time, while the palate balances richness with remarkable elegance and persistence. Although approachable earlier than many traditional Barolos, the finest vintages evolve beautifully over decades.
